I'm James — a carpenter, and until recently, someone else's employee. Not long ago I went out on my own and set up Total Scope Carpentry as a sole trader. Nobody really warns you how many ways a new business can quietly cost you money in those first few months — there's a fee, a form, or a "quick job" waiting behind every corner you didn't know was there. I hit more than a few of those traps myself.

One of the most frustrating was the website. I got quotes running into the thousands of dollars for something that, for a business just starting out, didn't need to cost anywhere near that. After a couple of expensive false starts, I ended up building totalscopecarpentry.com.au myself — with a lot of help from Claude Code, Anthropic's AI coding tool. It worked. It went live, it looked professional, and it didn't cost me money I couldn't yet afford to spend.

That got me thinking: if Claude could help me build a proper website for next to nothing, why not build something that does the same for other tradies hitting that exact same wall? That's BuildSpot. My hope is that it can help, in some small way, tradies get their business started without breaking the bank in the process.
